COCOON HOUSE | VAUCLUSE

COCOON HOUSE | VAUCLUSE

This home design project is an example of architectural ingenuity overcoming site limitations to create an exquisite, tranquil Vaucluse residence with stunning harbour views.

First approached to design this home while working for RnB Property Group, Maxine received several hand drawn concept sketches from Luigi Rosselli as a starting point. Urgency for the design was accelerated by RnB’s neighbouring residential development having already started excavations.

The property’s awkward shape and traffic noise were imperative to resolve. It is surrounded by three roads to form a wedge shape with an acute narrowing at the rear. Perched on the upper side of eastern suburbs arterial, New South Head Road, it is exposed to continuous traffic noise and the brutal westerly sun.

An elevated cocoon-shaped concrete balcony spans the width of the property. The namesake design element performs double duty as a stunning terrace that also shields the home from external noise. Strategic use of natural materials, vegetation and screens augment the buffering of noise while creating a modern, statement aesthetic in harmony with the prestigious streetscape.

Entry to the home is from Clairvaux Road. A grand front door opens onto a double volume rise that intuitively draws the eye to breath-taking views of Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

An open plan entertaining area provides 22m of unencumbered space for lounge, dining and kitchen, a clever way to leverage the narrow section of the property.  A beautiful, hand-crafted, organic oval stair connects all vertical and horizontal planes at each level, creating a 3 storey entry that enlivens the senses while moving through the home.

The upper level houses the main bedroom suite and two children’s bedrooms both with walk-in robe and ensuite, and iconic harbour views.

A third child’s bedroom, guest bedroom and media room are on the lower level, along with the superbly imagined informal entertainment area. The organically designed rumpus room and kitchenette lead to a covered, reed-ceilinged terrace and pool, complete with pool island seating and fire pit for year-round entertaining.

Cocoon House is an utterly inviting, versatile and tranquil residence, with original design features and abundant use of natural materials that allow the dweller to enjoy a resort lifestyle.
